“I raised the height of the surroundings of the palace,
to be a Wonder for all Peoples...

A high garden imitating the Amanus mountains I laid out
next to it, with all kinds of
aromatic plants, orchard fruit
trees, trees that enrich not only mountain country but also Babylonia”

King Ashurnasirpal II of his
predecessor King Sennacherib
740 -681 BCE

The design of the logo in many ways sets the tone for the branding with a blend of traditional and modern graphics. The icon is hand rendered from the ancient Babylonian symbol meaning “House” or “Home”. Contrasting this is a modern logotype which has an equal Arabic equivalent and descriptor “Travels to Table”.

The name itself “Ninive” or “Nineveh” is the place name of an ancient Assyrian city of Upper Mesopotamia, located in modern-day northern Iraq. It was the largest city in the world for some fifty years until the year 612 BC but more importantly is now believed to be the true location of the famous hanging gardens of Babylon. By adopting this name the brand makes reference to the historical past and origin of the many Arabic and Middle Eastern cultures which act as the inspiration for the cuisine. This creative influence is also reflected in the high gardened walls that surround the restaurant and the abundance of plant life within the interior.

Ninive
Brand Concept and Communications Design

Nestled at the foot of Emirates Tower in Dubai’s financial district is an oasis of calm. A high walled garden of authentic design and rich cultural references that contrasts but also compliments it’s slick commercial surroundings.

Ninive will act as a home from home for discerning local clientele and international travellers seeking a more personal and diverse restaurant experience. The customers make the experience, the space ‘belongs’ to them. The interior is a blank canvas of comfortable, familiar materials upon which layers of culture, art and narrative are built up over time. The space will adapt and evolve to the customers and their preferences creating the inclusive feeling of a ‘soft membership’.

Pattern Design

One of Ninive’s key graphic assets is its brand pattern.

A.M. STUDIOWORKS commissioned and worked alongside the artist and designer Meryem Meg to build a layered tapestry of ancient Arabic and Berber symbols. The lines of the pattern build from beneath in a reference to the traditional Majlis or Nagash mural painting style of traditional Arabic homes.

It is this pattern coupled with a colour palette of deep rich tones and blend of traditional serif and modern typefaces that play out across the brand collateral.
